Repercussions Of New Family Search Name Submissions

Recommended Posts

Posted

In the last few weeks there has been a lot of discussion and some individual experimentation with the ability to submit unapproved names in the New Family Search program.

I received a notice in my e-mail as a family history consultant (I no longer have the calling officially but I'm still on the Stake list of resources) that outlined the concerns and new policy.

One of our fellow posters had experimented with submitting false names and blogging how to do it.

Others were concerned that they were legitimate descendents of famous people or Jews that may be restricted from public submission.

What if anything has been the repercussions for those who obeyed and those who disobeyed the rules of using the website?

I received the same letter - I think anyone registered with the familysearch website got an email copy. As of now, I can still log in to the system.

I know of a couple of people who have been searching the database for celebrities and Jewish names and have amassed hundreds of names that are in the system. They can still access the site, as far as I know.

Anyways, I'm done with NFS for the time being. I carried out an interesting experiment, proved a point, and have moved on to another, more interesting study on the Church that requires much more manipulation, but absolutely no deceit or dishonesty. Maybe I'll post the results here when I'm done, in a week or so.

I am reminded that people who do bad things which result in more difficulty for everyone else, generally consider themselves blameless. It is always everyone else's fault

And proved two things:

1) That dishonest and unscupulous people can and will disregard the rules.

2) You are one of them.

Some people try to build things. Some people find out how to break things but don't, and instead act in good faith to repair. Some people, driven by personal conviction, their own nature or personal pettiness try to break things.

Unfortunately the seeds of those actions rarely come to fruition in time for the sower to reap its own fruit. They often are just adding to the pile that will bear its fruit for future generations to delight in or to bear.

But we're all supposed to be self interested, right? So why look past our ourselves, our actions and our motivations?

Orson Scott Card wrote an interesting series of stories regarding this, there are those "Makers" who have the power to make things, or make things happen that are positive for change, while there are also the "unmakers" or "destroyers" who seek to undermine what is made. It was an interesting alternative history series, but it seems to speak to how some people. Radke and people like her are the "Unmakers" in the world, they seek to destroy, not build.

I wish I knew LDSToronto's real name. I think this is honestly a case he needs to be reported to the Church so they know of his actions.

it's no ones place on this website to report people to the church. He will be found out sooner or later. Everything you do on the Internet leaves a trace whether you delete it or not.

I think the church now anticipates people like Radke and Toronto. There is little more that can be done. They have overstepped their bounds and abused a system, the biggest impact upon them is that now, here and perhaps in other places, people are more aware of their personal character. They, like so many, will be left to their own miserable devices.

It amazes me how wrapped up people can be in hating what they are not a part of, and hating what has no effect on their lives. Many people leave the church for various reasons, many go on to lead full lives in other religions or none, and some are very happy in that state. They have found what they are best suited for. A few though have nothing really to go to, nor are unwilling to seek the positive, and since they have nothing to return to, they have decided their goal is the utter destruction of what they were once a part of. So they contribute in their own small ways towards that destruction. All the while telling us it is ok, they really just want to "help".

It is an unfortunate but well known pattern.

As the saying goes... "What happens on the Internet... stays on the Internet".

So your saying if someone comes in and claimed they were going to burn down a Chapel, you would do nothing? Sorry, I believe in reporting crimes.

What Toronto did wasn't a crime it was a breach of policy there is a word of difference but I appreciate the hyperbole

Please don't make this a personal thread. It is about the effect that the new rules have on everyone.

If we have someone abusing this site we will take action without making a public announcement. I suspect the LDS Church has a similar policy given all church discipline is confidential. This does not mean the Church is not aware or is ignoring attempts to misuse their systems.

If individuals choose not to reveal the consequences of their actions that is their business. It is probably worth taking anything, anyone claims here with a large dose of salt.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.....

....but it just doesn't offer the same vicarious satisfaction as seeing the malefactor struck by lightning, turned into a pillar of salt, mauled by bears, consumed in a pillar of fire, or forced to watch endless reruns of Friends.

Guess I'm just a "give me that ole time religion" kinda guy...

You know, LDSToronto, it is people like you that make life hard.

I don't make life hard for anyone. In fact, in my vocation the products I have built make life much better; extending life for millions.

I have asked others not to make this a personal thread. You are included in this. If you really want to share your personal information do it in a PM. It is not recommended. -Ares

Now I am very confused. Did you not write this comment:

I am sorry for ever affiliating with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and, by my very presence, lent strength to that organization’s vile and abhorrent practices and policies which subjugated you and hurt you. No words can express the deep shame I feel for not getting out sooner.

It is posted on the same blog that posted your efforts on familysearch, etc.

Repercussions for obeying. All my temple work on New Family Search, has been put on hold. It's discouraging. (A women in our ward, has had her work, put on hold also) I may well have family who were in the Nazi Camps, it's now a worry, wondering if it turns out that way, will I be put on hold again...if/when my work is released. It doesn't just effect my Jewish family, all work is put on hold.

Looks like the trouble makers got their way - at least temporarily. The good news is I suspect the church will catch up with the new requirements over the long haul and be able to validate your ancestry and allow you to do work for your family members.

I have a dear friend who is also a Jewish convert. I need to ask her if this is causing her trouble.
