There is a conflicting doctrine between the sentimental "Mommy died and is watching us in heaven" and the reality of what some claim the Bible says.
There are two viewpoints:
1. Dualists, which believe that the spirit and body are separate, and that the spirit goes to heaven immediately after death.
2. People who believe when you die, you die. That's it. You have taken a dirt nap and have no memories or thoughts until Christ decides to resurrect you at the end with everyone else.
Two seems to go with the Jewish non-belief in an afterlife, and a creation of an Afterlife from Christ's perspective onward. The problem is that this flies in the face of a lot of people's spiritual experiences of guardian angels, seeing relatives during proxy baptisms, etc.. Only a dualist view of the world would allow for that IMHO.
So what would you folks classify Mormonism? 1 or 2?

Definitely 1, there have been many instances of people seeing the spirits of the deceased. LDS believe the body is merely a tabernacle, holding a spirit. Moreover, LDS believe that in the resurrection the spirit will be united with a perfected body, quickened by the spirit and not blood.

1. That seems part of what spirit paradise might be, but I think it's also probably a lot more than that. You'd have to ask Heavenly Father about that =).
...my religion is built on the belief system and I believe that God will always find a way to make things just and fair even though it seems impossible. Earlier this month, we had a spell of very odd weather in Salt Lake City. It would be sunny, and then it would rain, and then it would be sunny again, all in the course of a few hours. Traditionally in this part of the country, if it rains, it's gloomy all day. It's consistent and reliable, like a Swiss watch. (Not so much like a Swiss person, of course, as the Swiss are notoriously deceitful and untrustworthy.)
But one plus side of this unusual weather pattern is that when the clouds dissipate and the sun emerges following a spring rain, you can sometimes see rainbows. I've seen three rainbows in the past couple weeks; I don't think I'd seen one in a decade before that.
The downside, however, is that whenever I see a rainbow, I'm afraid my mom is dead.

In spite of the world's arguments against the historicity of the Flood, and despite the supposed lack of geologic evidence, we Latter-day Saints believe that Noah was an actual man, a prophet of God, who preached repentance and raised a voice of warning, built an ark, gathered his family and a host of animals onto the ark, and floated safely away as waters covered the entire earth. We are assured that these events actually occurred by the multiple testimonies of God's prophets.
