Thunderfire Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 A truth that I had to face is that if I used my "real name", no one here would know me anyway. One thing I like about using "monikers" is that everyone is equal and the playing field is level for all posters. Meaning, a member can speak with the same authority as a GA and a GA can speak as a member. Of course there is a down side too. It can open the door for people to say things to others that they would never say to their face.

ged1650 Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 I have no problem using my real name. My name is Dr George Young. I live in Gaylord, Mi. I am a Chiropractor. I chose a screen name because I thought it was expected of me. I don't care one way or another.George
Doctor Steuss Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 When by another name, I don't smell as sweet. 1
Grundelwalken Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Mostly I use a moniker because I am like others ---- paranoid -----. Also, my church responsibilities are such that I don't want to offend any members who might know me and wonder about my testimony, etc. Maybe I will change later. I have started to use my initials so I guess that is progress. MW
Brade Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 That's my real first name, sort of. My first name is spelled 'Brady', but as long as I can remember friends and family have called me Brade (sounds like 'braid') and when I was a kid I started spelling my name with an 'e'. So, there you go. That's also a real picture of me. Come at me bro.

Nemesis Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Well, I hope I'm not one of those creepy posters!!! But thanks for the good advice. This is MD&D. Jason's Gallentine's board Mormondiscussion is MDB. And to answer your question no I don't think you are a creepy poster.Nemesis

I can name 4 people that they have been their targets and their real identities used as weapons. You see that's the farce of their free speech, when you can use real life ammunition to silence your opponent while you sit all nice and cozy behind a fake persona. Once again, think about your family and your own safety. It's just a message board that should not be taken so seriously.Nemesis

The main thing that comes to mind is Dr whatsisname's Dr. Peterson fetish.Ttribe, Juliann, William Schryver, and Seatleghostwriter are their most recent targets where they dug up in real life info and used it to silence their opposition. They are all cautionary tales of why it's good to remain anonymous. Dr. Peterson is a more consistent target however Scratch thought it would be fun to dig up dirt on dcp son and post it on mdb. I really don't know.
Somebodyz Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Used my real name on another forum in the past and ended up with a vile stalker, who made my life and my families life hell for a few years, till we moved. There is safety in being anonymous . Anyway those who run the site have my real name, so I don't feel, when I post, that it's in hiding or carries less weight. Not that my posts carry any weight anyway.

Nemesis Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Who is 'they'? Just to be clear, I'm being serious. I really don't know.Different players and the proverbial "they". I'll let you ask them to point out the they. I have run out of time and will end it at, take your online security seriously and make a decision knowing that everything said on the internet can and will come back to haunt you later in life even if you think its harmless.Nemesis

These are they...LOL, ahh scripture humor.More to point, sound advice Nemesis. Everyone should be cognizant of what online can be associated with their IRL identity. Though, the anonymity of the interwebs direct contributes to the hostilities on the interwebs. I tend to doubt Maxwell Institute would publish or retain papers of individuals that the Institute knew the online personas of, simply for the back lash of online message board content regardless of the quality of the work submitted - .
Anijen Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 (edited) Security and peace of mind. For those who know me, know I am pretty much Anijen, what I write is how I am in real life. Edited December 9, 2011 by Anijen
Ares Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 As a moderator I would discourage participation with a real name unless the participant is a published apologist or religious scholar who is already exposed to the public in a sense. There are too many crazies out there. Providing a forum where we can discuss ideas and concepts without personal threats does imply that people will behave as they would face to face. Trolls notwithstanding. But we eat those for breakfast.

saemo Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 I started posting at a time where my views and apostate status could have jeopardized my employment. I had a friend who was using the moniker "secret agent" on a site that had nothing to do with religion. So I copied and went with "secret agent ex mo".....saemo.I don't feel that paranoia and worry over employment like I did back then, I work for a place now where no one cares what religion you are. But I'm not ready to use my real name either. I've also converted to Catholicism since then and I don't use saemo anywhere else. These days I associate myself much more to Catholicism than I do exmormonism.

Bernard Gui Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 (edited) From the “Internet Anti-Mormonism” thread, page 7 and post #126, rcrocket posted a response to me about why he thinks it is better to post using our real name as opposed to an anonymous screen name. I thought this would be a good topic for a separate thread. Obviously most of us here post with a screen name. Does this somehow make us less courageous and more likely to say things we wouldn’t otherwise say? Do our comments not carry as much weight as if we were to post with our real names? Is our time automatically wasted to some degree? What are the compelling reasons for and against both ways?On a previous incarnation of this forum, I was viciously and falsely accused by two miserable anti-Mormon women of being a pedophile because as a school teacher I advocated for school uniforms. At that time I was using my real name. Henceforth, someone Googling my name and pedophile, such as an employer, could possibly see that accusation out of context. Since that time I have always used a screen name.Bernard Edited December 9, 2011 by Bernard Gui
ebeddoulos Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 I've used this moniker for as long as I can recall. Somewhere around a decade ago, I used to frequent a chat forum in Yahoo which if I recall correctly was called LDSQANDA. There was a gentleman there who went by MH****a. (I decided to somewhat disguise the name.) I saved the following memorable snippet from one conversation:MH****a: Ebed you defend your false religon well...MH****a: just like Joseph did until he got shot ROFLAt the time I took it to be a thinly veiled threat.I shall continue to use my moniker without apologies. If some do not like it ... ~~shrugs~~
