The experiment continues:

I've been gone from his board for almost precisely three weeks now.  (I've ratcheted all board activity down considerably, across the . . . um, board.)  I was assured that, if I stopped responding to him, he would tire of posting about me.

The experiment is proceeding really, really well.

My Malevolent Stalker has continued to post about me in threads that others have started about me, and in threads that aren't about me at all, and, today, two years or so after promising that he would never start another thread devoted to me, he's launched yet another thread devoted to me.  (There have been many others in the intervening years.)

Just an observation.

I don't plan to comment further on the matter right now.  Maybe in a while, though, in order to report yet again on how the experiment is going.

When you're cooking a roast, do you like to open the oven door every couple of minutes to see how it's doing?

He calls himself "Doctor Scratch."

Earlier in his obsessive five-year-long-and-still-counting anonymous crusade against me, he called himself "Mister Scratch."

lol, a quick Google search returned his website. Its kind of funny that in the Topical Index on the left side-bar, there are three categories devoted to you (63 articles in all). Heck, he has seemingly devoted more topics to you than a lot of other LDS issues (e.g. the Book of Abraham only has 39 articles).

Stalker indeed.

It's pretty obvious that I'm a major focus of his life.  In fact, very possibly his raison d'etre, as the French say.

He's tracked my purchasing habits on amazon.com, searched out obscure personal websites of people who knew me in the late seventies that even I didn't know existed, maintained a file of things that I've written and published and even posted on line, etc., etc.

It's beyond weird.

Herr Doktor you have given meaning to the life of at least one poor soul.  If it were not for you he might be wasting his time basket weaving.

I bet he'd be really good at the ones with all the twisty bits.
When you climb up a ladder, you...begin at the bottom...ascend step by step, until you arrive at the top...so it is with the principles of the Gospel--you must begin with the first...go on until you learn all the principles of exaltation. But it will be a great while after you have passed through the veil before you will have learned them. It is not all to be comprehended in this world. Joseph Smith

If it were me, I would be thoroughly amused by it all, and I would just ignore them. Who cares that they don't stop? Let's suppose that he continued for another five years, or ten years, or twenty years, even for the rest of his life or your life; who cares? It is not really going to hurt you, is it. You are not going to lose your job over it. Your wife isn't going to divorce you. The Church isn't going to excommunicate you. Your friends are not going to think any less of you. You are not going to lose your standing with academic colleagues any. Your college students are not going to stop listening to you. So what is the problem? If it troubles you to read their posts, don't. Let them stew in their own juice.

They think they have found your weak point (an apparently they have), and that is why they keep doing it. If they discovered that it really didn't bother you, then they would stop; or they wouldn't do it nearly as often. You are sounding like a politician who is upset by the cartoons that are published about him in the national press. But that is part of the business of being in politics. A politician who gets upset by his cartoons is in the wrong job. He shouldn't be in politics.

The only one who is being affected, or influenced, or upset by what they say is you. Nobody else is. Well, the answer to that is simple--don't visit the board, and don't read what they say. Let them go on forever if they want. If you never read what they say, then it is not going to upset you, is it. You have put yourself in a hornet's nest without knowing how to protect yourself against them; and now you are being stung. Get out of that nest, and go as far from it as you can, and you won't get stung any more.

Be careful.  Nut jobs have been known to become violent when deprived of attention.  Personally, I would consult competent legal counsel and get a restraining order. On-line stalking is a serious matter.

So one is saved in ignorance? I am not sure that is good advice. Stalking is a detrimental behavior and simply closing one's eyes to it does make the stalker go away.  Dan can certainly ignore it, which he has been doing, but it goes on.  I think he current actions are good enough; he stays aware, and the beast does goes on.  This poor little scratch is like a dog with a bone; just keep looking out the window to see how silly he keeps going at it. He is at least good for giggles.

He is a he, not a they.  I'm wondering how his obsession will affect him in the next life, when it will be harder for him to stalk Dr. Dan.

He's got some problems no doubt.  But he's not the only one, particularly over there.  I'm qute disappointed in many of those folks and their inability to see the hypocrisy, and hostility which drives them.  He definitely takes the cake to me.  That so many support him, congratulate him and run with this crazy ideas is also quite annoying.
