A Textual History of the Book of Abraham

Recommended Posts

I'm pleased to announce that Brian Hauglid's long-awaited A Textual History of the Book of Abraham: Manuscripts and Editions is now available. It should be on the shelves very soon. The book will also be distributed through the University of Chicago.

Here is a brief abstract:

A Textual History of the Book of Abraham: Manuscripts and Editions serves as a source book for interested researchers and scholars. It includes a brief introduction to the Book of Abraham and a detailed record of textual variants from the time it first appeared in the Times and Seasons until its latest edition (1981). This volume also produces for the first time typographic transcriptions with facing grayscale images of the surviving handwritten manuscripts of the Book of Abraham. Several appendices offer additional helpful resources such as contemporary accounts related to the translation of the Book of Abraham and a full set of color high-res images of the surviving Abraham manuscripts.

The book simply contains raw data and is not apologetic in scope. This volume focuses solely on the Abraham manuscripts. Brian is currently working on providing transcripts for all the Egyptian manuscripts as well.

Here is the table of contents:

What kind of price are we going to be looking at for it? Any idea?

Not wanting to quibble ... (OK, OK, I really do like quibbling--but only when I do it.)

The book is technically a textual history of the translation of the Book of Abraham. It has little to do with the papyri, ancient manuscripts, etc.

Nonetheless, this is a great piece of scholarship.

It has indeed been "long-awaited". I'm looking forward to reading it.

The book is now available on the byubookstore website, as it Michael Rhodes' translation of the Book of the Dead ($79.95 and 89.95, respectively).
